As an independent consultant for some years now, I have had people ask me why I do what I do. After spending today at a fundraising event as a vendor I felt inspired to share exactly what draws me to direct sales.
I am sure you have all heard the pitches from direct sales companies . . . “Be your own boss!” . . . “Work around your family’s schedule” . . . “Earn extra money for the holiday’s” . . . “Earn tropical cruises, cars, cash bonuses, etc.” . . . “Live your dreams.”
Well, I have to tell you, those reasons were what lead me to direct sales, but that is not what drives me now. I am not making piles of money or earning tropical cruises, but I am having fun!
My greatest joy in life is to connect with other women. I love comparing notes on life, family, jobs, cooking, and all the things that we women have to deal with in our lives. I like knowing that the things I am going through happen to others. I like learning new tips and ideas. I like laughing at the things we do or our families do. It is a de-stressing experience. And no matter if I do great in sales or not, I almost always take something with me from the people I meet – it is a good feeling, upbeat attitude that I carry for days.
Take today for instance. I got to spend the day in a country club, chatting with wonderful women, had a delicious lunch, and enjoyed some really good conversation with a lovely woman and her husband that were there selling homemade dry soup mixes, rice mixes, and biscotti mixes. We had the best time! We talked about our families, our travels, what it is like being over 40, cooking and more. The day was over before we knew it.
I think women are designed to connect and socialize in order to help us get through life. We are a sisterhood – even when we are strangers we can almost always find common ground on some subject.
I am sure I could find other ways to connect with women, buy direct sales is a great way to get out and meet others. Plus, unlike being the member of an organization, I get to enjoy variety. I attend vendor events and open houses all over the place and get the chance to meet new people all the time.
Are you like me? Do you enjoy meeting new people? How have you been blessed by spending the day with other women you have never met before? Please share in a comment below. I would love to hear from you!

Hi Kim!!
I have been in direct sales off and on for several years. I am now on with a few good companies. I will be backing off of a couple that are not working for me.
I am like you. I love sharing a good product and meeting new people. Some great friendships can be developed through direct selling.
Thanks so much for stopping by! I am glad you enjoy the fringe benefits of direct sales. The relationships that we can build are so rewarding!
I am downsizing the companies I rep for also. I am picking the one that I am having the most success with and focusing on making it great!
I wish you much success! Thank you again for sharing with me!
Really love this post! I’ve just recently gotten into Direct Sales. I’m hoping to do more with it and be able to connect with more women as well.
Thank you! If you look at being in direct sales as more than just a job, you will do great! Think of all the opportunities you will have to touch other women’s lives and to be touched by theirs. We women need to stick together and learn from one another. I have been blessed time and time again by other women that I meet while out and about working my business.
One of the great things about direct sales is the opportunities it gives women to stay at home with family when needed and work around those schedules, while bringing in extra income. Sometimes you are able to bless a too-stressed mom by introducing her to your company.
I wish you a very successful future! Be sure to look for those small blessings – they are there even if you didn’t have a good sales day!
